Configuration of All-Optical Port Switch

Optical port switches can be configured by installing the appropriate transceivers, assigning VLANs, and managing traffic through software or GUI interfaces, with options for local or remote control.

Hardware Setup

  1. Install Optical Modules or SFPs: Ensure the correct SFP or optical module is installed in the switch port. Multi-mode or single-mode fibers should match the transceiver type. For MEMS-based optical switches, micro-machined mirrors redirect light to selected ports, supporting up to 48 outputs per input fiber .
  2. Clear Previous Configurations: If replacing an existing optical module, clear prior configurations to avoid conflicts. For example, on Cisco NCS 1001, clear card parameters, OTS controller configurations, and optionally controller optics if replacing an EDFA module .

Port Configuration

  1. Assign VLANs: Configure VLANs for different traffic types. For example, management traffic can use VLAN 1, internet traffic VLAN 10, VOIP VLAN 20, and IPTV VLAN 30 .
  2. Bind Bandwidth Profiles: In GPON networks, bind T-Conts to DBA profiles to manage upstream bandwidth dynamically. Fixed bandwidth profiles reserve bandwidth for specific ONUs, while assured bandwidth profiles allocate remaining bandwidth to other ONUs .
  3. Configure Switching Architecture: Decide between blocking or non-blocking architectures. Non-blocking allows any input to connect to any output without restrictions, while blocking limits simultaneous connections .

Software and Remote Management

  1. Local Control: Use RS232 or console interfaces for direct configuration.
  2. Remote Control: Many optical switches support Ethernet-based management with GUI interfaces for point-and-click operation, enabling remote port switching and monitoring .
  3. Traffic Monitoring: Verify connectivity and monitor traffic using switch software or network management tools. SFP transceivers can be monitored for link status, power levels, and data throughput .

Advanced Considerations

  • Protection Switching: Optical switches can reroute traffic to backup fibers in case of failure, with switching times in milliseconds for network protection .
  • Switching Speed: Depending on application, optical switches may need millisecond, nanosecond, or picosecond switching times, especially for packet switching or modulation .
  • Port Count: Ensure the switch has sufficient ports for your application, considering future expansion and redundancy . By following these steps, optical port switches can be effectively configured for both GPON and enterprise networks, ensuring proper traffic segregation, bandwidth management, and reliable optical connectivity.
