Attached suspension cable optical cable

Attached suspension cable optical cables are fiber-optic cables installed along a host conductor using specialized suspension hardware to maintain mechanical integrity and optical performance.

Overview of Attached Optical Cables

Optical attached cables (OPAC) are fiber-optic cables that are physically attached to a host conductor, typically along overhead power lines. The attachment can be achieved through wrapping, lashing, or clipping the fiber-optic cable to the host conductor. Installation is usually performed with specialized equipment that moves along the host conductor, ensuring the cable is securely fastened without damaging the fibers . Wrapped cable systems, developed in the 1980s, remain the most common method worldwide .

Suspension Hardware

To support optical cables along spans, various suspension and tension hardware are used:

  • Mechanical Suspensions: Lightweight assemblies that support optical ground wire (OPGW) or fiber-optic cables through line angle changes. They handle vertical, transverse, and longitudinal loads without damaging the cable strands or affecting optical performance. Breakaway bolts simplify installation and eliminate the need for specialized torque tools .
  • Suspension Clamps: These clamps, often made of aluminum alloy or anti-UV polymer with protective inlays, allow the cable to hang freely while controlling bending stress. They are used for straight sections of the routing path and can support spans from 100 to 600 meters depending on design .
  • Tension Clamps (Dead-End Clamps): Used at the end of a span or where the cable changes direction. They form a rigid hold, transferring mechanical loads to poles or towers. Preformed helical rods and corrosion-resistant fittings protect the fibers from stress .
  • Armour Grip Suspensions: Composed of helical rods and a neoprene insert, these clamps prevent axial displacement and improve the lifetime of vibrating conductors or optical cables. They are short-circuit-proof and allow asymmetric vibration without inducing local bending stress .

Installation Considerations

  • Span and Load Management: Suspension systems must accommodate unbalanced loads, angle pulls, and environmental factors like wind or ice without compromising fiber integrity .
  • Compatibility: Different manufacturers' systems are not interchangeable; the cable design, attachment method, and installation equipment must match .
  • Safety and Maintenance: Properly installed suspension hardware ensures long-term reliability, reduces vibration-induced stress, and maintains optical performance over the cable's lifespan .

Applications

Attached suspension optical cables are widely used for:

  • High-voltage transmission lines (OPAC or OPGW)
  • Distribution networks (ADSS)
  • Communication links integrated with power infrastructure
  • Environments requiring minimal ground footprint and secure overhead routing These systems provide a reliable, adjustable, and mechanically secure method to deploy fiber-optic cables along existing infrastructure while protecting the fibers from mechanical and environmental stress.

This is an attractive concept for many power utilities because it means that the communications network is under their own control and can be tailored to meet their particular requirements with suitable attributes such as redundancy, latency and bandwidth. Once built, the network is relatively inexpensive to operate compared to rental charges previously paid to phone companies. The network connects direct
