What Optical Transceivers Do

An optical transceiver is a compact, hot-swappable module that performs bidirectional communication by converting electrical signals from network devices into optical signals for transmission over fiber, and converting incoming optical signals back into electrical form for the device to process . They are used in switches, routers, servers, and network interface cards to enable high-speed, long-distance communication. Transceivers include components such as a transmitter optical sub-assembly (TOSA), receiver optical sub-assembly (ROSA), and internal circuitry for signal conditioning and diagnostics .

What Fiber Optic Switches Do

A fiber optic switch, in contrast, is a network device that routes or switches optical signals between different fiber paths without converting them to electrical signals. These switches allow multiple optical connections to be dynamically managed, enabling network reconfiguration, redundancy, or load balancing. Unlike transceivers, switches do not perform signal conversion; they simply direct light signals along different fiber paths.
