Standards and Guidelines

  • NEC Section 300-7(b) requires raceways, including cable trays, to have expansion joints where necessary to compensate for thermal expansion or contraction .
  • NEMA VE 1 provides detailed recommendations for metallic cable tray systems, including expansion joint placement, bonding, and support .
  • Bonding jumpers around expansion joints should match the fault current capacity of the tray side rails or cross-section to maintain electrical continuity .

Placement and Spacing

  • Expansion joints should be installed at regular intervals, particularly where temperature changes are significant .
  • The spacing depends on:
    • Material type (steel, aluminum, etc.) due to different thermal expansion coefficients.
    • Expected temperature differential between installation and maximum operating temperatures.
  • Supports should be located within 2 feet of each side of the expansion joint splice plates. The tray should not be clamped too tightly to allow free movement .
