Step 1: Verify Optical Module Type and Maximum Distance

Check the optical module's specifications to ensure it supports the required transmission distance. Each module has a maximum transmission distance, which depends on the wavelength and fiber type. For example, a 10GBASE-LR SFP module may support up to 10 km on single-mode fiber, while a 1000BASE-SX module may support 300 m on multimode fiber (50 µm) or 150 m (62.5 µm) . Using a module beyond its rated distance can cause signal loss or alarms.

Step 2: Confirm Fiber Type Compatibility

Ensure the fiber type matches the optical module:

  • Single-mode fiber (yellow) → single-mode module
  • Multimode fiber (orange) → multimode module Two connected modules must also have the same wavelength . Mismatched fiber or wavelength can trigger low or high optical power alarms.

Step 3: Install the Optical Module Properly

Insert the module until the latch clicks, ensuring the gold fingers make proper contact. Clean the optical connector before insertion to prevent contamination. Cover unused modules and connectors with protective caps to avoid dust . Improper installation can cause intermittent signal loss or module damage.

Step 4: Check Optical Power and Distance

Use Huawei commands to view module information and verify distance:

  • display transceiver interface <interface-type> <interface-number> verbose This command shows the module type, wavelength, and transfer distance along with real-time diagnostic data such as RX/TX power, temperature, and bias current . Ensure the fiber length is shorter than the module's maximum supported distance. If the fiber is too long, either shorten it or use a module rated for longer distances .

Step 5: Use Optical Attenuators if Needed

For long-distance modules, high optical power can damage the module's APD. If testing or self-looping generates excessive power, insert an optical attenuator to prevent overload .

Step 6: Monitor and Troubleshoot

Regularly check the module's digital diagnostic monitoring (DDM) data for RX/TX power and alarms. If low or high optical power alarms occur, verify module type, vendor compatibility, fiber type, and distance . Modules from different vendors may have slightly different power thresholds even if the wavelength is the same. By following these steps, you can ensure that Huawei optical modules operate within their designed transmission distance, maintain signal quality, and avoid damage.
