Understanding OTDR Testing

An Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) is used to test fiber optic cables by sending pulses of light down the fiber and measuring backscattered signals to detect faults, splices, and connectors along the cable length . OTDR testing is particularly important for long outside plant (OSP) cables with multiple splices, as it allows verification of each splice and identification of breaks, bends, or high-loss points .

Common OTDR Faults and Corrections

  1. High Insertion Loss: If OTDR traces show excessive loss at a splice or connector, inspect the connector end-face for dirt, scratches, or improper polishing. Clean or re-terminate the connector as needed .
