Overview of DDN Systems

A Dual Distribution Network (DDN) system is designed to deliver both power and data to remote locations using hybrid cable systems. The DDN Headend manages power distribution and ensures safety by disconnecting power in case of faults, preventing equipment damage or personal injury. It can accept AC or DC input and provide up to 12 kW of power, complying with NEC 70 Fault Managed Power System standards and IEC 62368-1 limited power source certification. DDN systems often use compact 1U distribution frames capable of splicing up to 144 fibers and terminating multiple copper pairs, optimizing rack space and installation efficiency .

Role of Optical Modules in DDN

An optical module is a hot-pluggable transceiver that converts electrical signals into optical signals for high-bandwidth data communication. In a DDN system, optical modules are integrated into hybrid cables to transmit data alongside power. These modules typically include:

  • Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly (TOSA): Converts electrical signals into optical signals using a laser diode (LD) or LED, with automatic optical power control to maintain consistent output .
  • Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly (ROSA): Converts incoming optical signals back into electrical signals using photodetectors such as PIN diodes or avalanche photodiodes (APDs), with trans-impedance and post-amplifiers to ensure signal integrity .
  • Electrical and Optical Interfaces: The module connects electrically to the system and optically to fiber cables, supporting standards like SFP, SFP+, XFP, CFP, and higher-speed variants for 100G, 400G, or 800G data rates .
