Fiber optic communication is divided into several categories

Fiber optic communication is classified based on transmission mode, refractive index, material, and network application, including single-mode, multi-mode, step-index, graded-index, glass, plastic, and submarine or terrestrial networks.

Classification by Transmission Mode

  • Single-mode fiber (SMF): Allows only one light mode to propagate, with a small core diameter (around 9 microns), suitable for long-distance, high-speed communication with minimal signal dispersion .
  • Multi-mode fiber (MMF): Supports multiple light modes, with a larger core diameter (50–62 microns), typically used for shorter distances such as within buildings or campuses. MMF can be further divided into:
    • Step-index MMF: Core has a uniform refractive index; light travels in meridional rays, causing more dispersion .
    • Graded-index MMF: Core refractive index gradually decreases from center to edge, reducing modal dispersion and improving signal quality over moderate distances .

Classification by Material

  • Glass fibers: High-quality silica glass, offering low attenuation and high bandwidth, ideal for long-distance and high-performance networks .
  • Plastic fibers: Easier to handle and cheaper, suitable for short-distance applications like home or office networks .

Classification by Network Application

  • Terrestrial cables: Used for local, metropolitan, or regional networks, often installed underground or along poles .
  • Submarine cables: Designed for underwater long-distance communication, including:
    • Repeatered submarine cables: Include repeaters to amplify signals for transoceanic distances .
    • Repeaterless submarine cables: Cost-effective for shorter underwater links without signal amplification .
    • Marinized terrestrial cables (MTC): Used for crossing lakes or rivers, designed for non-relay applications .

Structural Components

All fiber optic cables share three main components:

  • Core: Carries the light signal.
  • Cladding: Surrounds the core, reflecting light back to maintain total internal reflection.
  • Protective coating: Shields the fiber from environmental damage and mechanical stress .

Summary

Fiber optic communication types are chosen based on distance, bandwidth requirements, and environmental conditions. Single-mode fibers are preferred for long-haul, high-speed links, while multi-mode fibers are suitable for shorter, local networks. Material choice and network application further refine the type of fiber used, ensuring optimal performance for telecommunications, internet, and specialized industrial applications .
