Many modern network switches support link aggregation, typically using LACP (IEEE 802.3ad) to combine multiple physical links into a single logical connection for increased bandwidth and redundancy.

What is Link Aggregation?

Link aggregation allows multiple Ethernet links to be combined into a single logical link, known as a Link Aggregation Group (LAG) or bundle, between two network devices such as switches, servers, or NAS devices . This setup increases total bandwidth, provides redundancy, and enables load balancing across the member links . If one physical link fails, traffic is automatically rerouted over the remaining links, maintaining network availability .

Types of LAGs Supported by Switches

  1. Static (Manual) LAG: Requires manual configuration on both ends of the link. It does not provide automatic failover and is prone to misconfiguration .
  2. Dynamic LAG using LACP: Uses the Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP), an industry-standard protocol (IEEE 802.3ad), to automatically manage link aggregation, detect link failures, and ensure both ends agree on the aggregation settings . This is the most common method supported by managed switches.

Switch-to-Switch and Switch-to-Client Aggregation

  • Switch-to-Switch Aggregation: Useful for interconnecting multiple switches to increase bandwidth and provide redundancy for high traffic loads .

  • Supported Link Speeds: Aggregated Ethernet interfaces can support mixed link speeds such as 10GbE, 40GbE, and 100GbE, but load balancing may not function correctly if unsupported speeds are mixed .

Limitations and Requirements

  • Ports often need to be sequential in number for aggregation .
  • Unmanaged switches generally do not support link aggregation .
  • Multi-chassis LAG (MLAG) may not be supported on all devices .
  • Proper cabling, such as SFP+ for high-speed uplinks, is recommended for maximum throughput .
