Working Principle

Tunable attenuators operate based on one or more of the following principles:

  • Absorptive Principle: Light passes through a material that absorbs a controlled portion of the optical signal. The attenuation level can be adjusted by changing the thickness or position of the absorbing element in the optical path .
  • Gap-Loss (Air Gap) Principle: Attenuation is achieved by introducing a small air gap between two fiber ends. By precisely controlling the gap distance, part of the light is scattered or reflected, reducing the transmitted power .
