What Are Optical Modules?

They operate at the physical layer of the OSI model, facilitating optoelectronic conversion to transmit data over long distances with minimal loss and interference . Typically, an optical module contains a Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly (TOSA), a Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly (ROSA), functional circuits, and a housing with optical and electrical interfaces . The TOSA converts electrical signals into modulated light using a laser diode (LD) or LED, while the ROSA converts incoming optical signals back into electrical signals using photodetectors such as PIN diodes or avalanche photodiodes (APDs) .
