Working Principle

Optical polarization modulators operate based on the electro-optic effect, primarily the Pockels effect, where the refractive index of a nonlinear crystal changes proportionally to an applied electric field . This change alters the phase difference between orthogonal polarization components of the light, effectively rotating or modulating its polarization state. In practice, a Pockels cell acts as a voltage-controlled waveplate, and applying a specific voltage can induce a desired phase shift, such as a half-wave or quarter-wave shift .

Types and Implementations

Polarization modulators can be implemented in bulk crystals or integrated waveguides:

  • Bulk modulators use discrete nonlinear crystals like lithium niobate (LiNbO₃) or KTP, often placed between electrodes to apply the electric field . They are suitable for high-power lasers and free-space beams.
