How to use a fiber splicing and fixing tool for optical cables

Using a fiber splicing tool involves careful preparation, precise alignment, and proper protection of the fiber ends to ensure minimal signal loss and a durable connection.

Step 1: Prepare the Work Area and Tools

Before starting, ensure your workspace is clean, well-lit, and free from dust or wind that could contaminate the fibers. Gather all necessary tools: a fiber optic stripper, kevlar cutter, high-precision cleaver, fusion splicer or mechanical splice tool, cleaning supplies (lint-free wipes and isopropyl alcohol), heat shrink sleeves, and protective eyewear . Clean all tools, especially the cleaver and splicer V-grooves, to prevent contamination .

Step 2: Strip and Clean the Fiber

Carefully remove the outer jacket, strength members, and buffer tubes using a fiber optic stripper until the bare fiber is exposed. Use a kevlar cutter to trim any remaining strength fibers. Clean the exposed fiber with isopropyl alcohol to remove dust and oils . Contamination is the most common cause of poor splices.

Step 3: Cleave the Fiber

Use a high-precision cleaver to cut the fiber ends cleanly and perpendicular to the axis. Proper cleaving ensures smooth, flat ends, which is critical for both fusion and mechanical splicing .

Step 4: Splice the Fiber

  • Fusion Splicing: Place the cleaved fibers into the fusion splicer. The machine aligns the fiber cores automatically and uses an electric arc to fuse the ends together. This method produces a permanent, low-loss connection, typically around 0.1 dB .
  • Mechanical Splicing: Insert the fibers into a mechanical splice sleeve with an index-matching gel. The gel bridges the microscopic gap between fibers, allowing light to pass with minimal reflection. Mechanical splices are faster but have slightly higher loss (0.2–0.75 dB) and are often used for temporary or emergency repairs .

Step 5: Protect the Splice

After splicing, slide a heat shrink sleeve over the joint and use a heat oven or sleeve heater to secure it. This protects the splice from mechanical stress and environmental factors .

Step 6: Test the Splice

Use a visual fault locator (VFL) or optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) to verify the splice quality. Check for low insertion loss and minimal back reflection to ensure the connection meets network standards .

Best Practices

  • Always wear safety glasses to protect against fiber shards.
  • Keep fibers and tools clean at all times.
  • Follow manufacturer guidelines for fusion splicer settings.
  • Perform OTDR testing from both directions for accurate results . By following these steps, you can achieve a reliable, low-loss fiber optic splice suitable for both permanent installations and temporary repairs.
