Understanding Bridge Mode in Fiber Networks

In fiber networks, the Optical Network Unit (ONU) or Optical Network Terminal (ONT) can operate in Bridge Mode or Router Mode. Bridge Mode, also called transparent mode, allows the ONU/ONT to act purely as a bridge, forwarding Ethernet frames from the fiber line to your router without performing NAT, DHCP, or firewall functions. This ensures that all routing decisions are handled by a dedicated router, reducing latency and simplifying network management . Router Mode, in contrast, enables the ONU/ONT to manage IP addresses, NAT, and routing internally, which can lead to double NAT issues if another router is used downstream .

Bridging Techniques

1. Wired Fiber Bridging
