Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) is a fiber-optic technology that transmits multiple data channels simultaneously over a single optical fiber, each using a distinct wavelength of light, dramatically increasing network capacity.

Overview

WDM is a multiplexing technique in fiber-optic communications that combines several optical signals at different wavelengths (colors) onto a single fiber, allowing each wavelength to carry an independent data stream. This approach significantly increases the total transmission capacity without laying additional fibers and enables bidirectional communication over a single strand, sometimes referred to as wavelength-division duplexing . A multiplexer (MUX) at the transmitter combines the wavelengths, while a demultiplexer (DEMUX) at the receiver separates them. Advanced devices, such as optical add-drop multiplexers (OADMs), can insert or remove specific channels without affecting others .

Types of WDM

  1. Coarse WDM (CWDM)
    • Uses fewer channels with wider spacing (typically 20 nm)
    • Cost-effective and suitable for metropolitan networks
    • Covers the 1310 nm and 1550 nm transmission windows, avoiding OH absorption regions in silica fibers
  2. Dense WDM (DWDM)
    • Uses many closely spaced channels (e.g., 40 channels at 100 GHz or 80 channels at 50 GHz)
    • Operates mainly in the C-band (1530–1565 nm) and L-band (1565–1625 nm)
    • Supports high-capacity, long-haul transmission, such as Internet backbones and data center interconnects
    • Compatible with Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFAs), which amplify multiple wavelengths simultaneously, enabling cost-effective upgrades

  • High capacity: Each channel can carry 10–400 Gbps, with aggregate capacities reaching terabits per second (Tbps) when multiple channels are combined
