Structure of an optical receiver

An optical receiver converts incoming light signals into electrical signals using a photodetector, amplifier, filter, equalizer, and decision circuitry, often integrated in a ROSA module.

Core Components

Photodetector: The first stage of an optical receiver is the photodetector, typically a PIN photodiode or avalanche photodiode (APD), which absorbs incoming photons and generates a proportional electrical current. APDs provide internal gain, allowing operation with lower optical power, while PIN diodes are simpler and faster for short distances . Transimpedance Amplifier (TIA): The weak photocurrent from the photodetector is converted into a voltage signal and amplified by a transimpedance amplifier, which ensures the signal is strong enough for further processing . Filtering and Equalization: A low-pass filter removes noise outside the useful frequency range and reduces intersymbol interference. An equalizer reshapes pulses that have spread during transmission, improving signal integrity . Clock Recovery and Sampling: A clock recovery circuit identifies bit boundaries, allowing a sampling circuit to measure the signal at the correct time. A decision circuit then compares each sample to a threshold voltage to determine whether it represents a 1 or 0 .

Integration in Optical Transceivers

In practical systems, the optical receiver is often packaged as a ROSA (Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly), which includes the photodiode, optical interface, housing, and electrical interface. The ROSA may also contain preamplifiers and post-amplifiers to boost and equalize the signal for digital processing . In modern transceivers, the ROSA is paired with a TOSA (Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly) to form a complete optical transceiver.

Additional Considerations

Optical receivers are designed for specific wavelengths (850 nm, 1310 nm, 1550 nm) depending on the fiber type. Key performance parameters include sensitivity (minimum optical power for reliable detection) and overload point (maximum power before distortion). High-speed receivers integrate photodetectors and TIAs in a single unit to reduce noise and improve performance . In summary, the structure of an optical receiver consists of a photodetector, amplifier, filter, equalizer, clock recovery, and decision circuitry, often integrated in a ROSA module, forming the essential component for converting optical signals into usable electrical data in fiber optic communication systems.
