Simple T-Connect Fittings for Cable Trays

A T-connection in cable trays can be achieved by using a combination of splice plates, nuts and bolts, and proper support brackets to securely join the main tray with a branching tray.

Overview

A T-connection allows a branch tray to extend perpendicularly from a main cable tray run. This is commonly used to route cables to different areas or equipment while maintaining system stability and electrical safety. Proper installation ensures load support, prevents sagging, and maintains grounding continuity.

Materials and Hardware

  • Splice Plates: Flat metal plates with pre-drilled holes used to join tray sections end-to-end or at junctions. For a T-connection, splice plates are positioned at the intersection of the main and branch trays to secure the joint.
  • Nuts and Bolts: Standard fasteners that secure splice plates to the tray sides. Proper torque is essential to prevent loosening due to vibration.
  • Support Brackets: L-shaped or custom T-support brackets may be used to reinforce the junction and distribute the load evenly.
  • Grounding Jumpers: Metal strips or braided conductors to maintain electrical continuity across the T-junction, especially in metal trays.

Installation Steps

  1. Plan the Layout: Determine the location of the T-connection and ensure adequate clearance for cable routing. Measure and mark the main tray and branch tray positions.
  2. Cut and Prepare Trays: If necessary, cut the main tray to accommodate the branch. Smooth edges to prevent cable damage.
  3. Attach Splice Plates: Position splice plates at the junction where the branch tray meets the main tray. Align holes with tray sides.
  4. Secure with Nuts and Bolts: Insert bolts through the splice plates and tray sides, then tighten nuts to the recommended torque. Ensure the connection is firm and level.
  5. Install Support Brackets: Place brackets under the junction to support the weight of cables in both the main and branch trays. Space supports according to tray type and load requirements.
  6. Ground the Connection: Connect grounding jumpers across the T-junction to maintain electrical continuity.
  7. Check Alignment and Stability: Ensure trays are level, properly aligned, and free from sagging. Adjust supports if necessary.
  8. Lay Cables: Route cables neatly, leaving slack for expansion or future adjustments. Use cable ties or straps to organize wiring.

Best Practices

  • Maintain proper tray sizing to avoid overloading.
  • Use corrosion-resistant materials if the installation is in a harsh environment.
  • Inspect connections periodically for loose bolts, corrosion, or misalignment.
  • Follow local electrical codes and manufacturer guidelines for T-connections. By following these steps, a simple and secure T-connection can be created in a cable tray system, ensuring long-term stability, safety, and ease of maintenance .
