How to connect the fiber optic cable to the pigtail cassette

Connecting a fiber optic pigtail cassette involves mounting the cassette, splicing pigtails to incoming fibers, routing fibers properly, and securing connections to ensure low loss and reliable performance.

Step 1: Prepare the Installation Area

Ensure the fiber enclosure or rack is securely mounted and aligned for easy access. Gather all necessary tools, including the fiber cassette, compatible jumper cables, fusion splicer, cleaver, cleaning tools, and cable ties . Confirm that the cassette meets your network requirements and that you have calculated the number of cassettes needed for your system .

Step 2: Mount the Cassette

Insert the fiber optic pigtail cassette into the enclosure. Most cassettes feature a tool-free push-lock design; press the cassette firmly into place to ensure a secure fit . Verify that the cassette is stable and properly seated.

Step 3: Prepare Incoming Fiber

Strip the outer jacket of the incoming fiber cable according to manufacturer specifications, typically around 20 inches, and secure it with cable ties and aramid yarn if required . Handle fibers carefully to avoid excess pulling, bending, or crushing, which can damage the fiber .

Step 4: Splice Pigtails

Slide a splice sleeve onto each fiber to be spliced. Using a fusion splicer, splice the incoming fibers to the pre-routed pigtails inside the cassette . For ribbon fibers, ensure proper orientation and polarity. Heat the splice sleeves to secure the fibers, and place them in the splice sleeve holders. Up to two sleeves can be stacked per holder if needed .

Step 5: Route and Secure Fibers

Route the spliced fibers along the cassette's internal routing paths, keeping them under the routing tabs to prevent bending or stress . Use strain relief features pre-applied to the pigtails to maintain fiber integrity. Store any excess fiber slack under the cassette flanges, typically up to 38 inches (96.5 cm), .

Step 6: Connect to Network Equipment

Plug the MTP® or LC connectors on the front panel of the cassette into the corresponding network equipment ports. Ensure connectors are fully seated and locked to prevent loose connections . Clean all connectors before mating to minimize insertion loss.

Step 7: Finalize Installation

Replace the cassette cover and secure it. Label the cassette and fibers as needed for future maintenance. Verify all connections and test the optical links to ensure proper signal transmission .

Safety Tips

  • Never look directly into fiber ends that may carry laser light .
  • Wear cut-resistant gloves when handling fibers and sharp tools .
  • Keep dust caps on unmated connectors to prevent contamination . Following these steps ensures a reliable, low-loss connection and protects the delicate fibers during installation and maintenance.
