Cable tray segmentation settings

Cable tray segmentation involves configuring individual tray segments for proper alignment, elevation, bend radius, and cable type segregation to ensure safe and efficient electrical installations.

Segment Configuration

Elevation and Offset: Each cable tray segment can be assigned a vertical elevation relative to the current level. You can enter a specific offset value or select from previously used offsets. Locking the elevation ensures the segment maintains its height and prevents connections to segments at different elevations, which is crucial for maintaining consistent routing and avoiding misalignment . Bend Radius: The bend radius determines how sharply a cable tray can curve. By default, it is set to the width of the tray, measured between the inside edges. You can adjust this using a multiplier in the Type Properties dialog to accommodate specific cable bending requirements . Segment Connections: Segments are drawn individually and snapped together at connection points. Blue circles indicate possible connection points along the tray, while red circles appear at segment ends. Proper snapping ensures continuous routing without gaps or overlaps .

Best Practices for Segmentation

  • Avoid Overlaps: Ensure tray parts do not fully or partially overlap, as overlaps can create very short segments or extra nodes that degrade software performance and affect fill rate calculations .
  • Maintain Adequate Spacing: Keep at least 10 cm between segments to allow for air jumps and visibility of connections .
  • Continuous Lines: Use interconnected straight pieces, reducers, curves, or miter joints to maintain continuous tray lines .

Cable Tray Segregation

Segregation is essential for safety and performance. Different cable types—power, control, and communication—should be physically separated within the tray to prevent electromagnetic interference (EMI), signal degradation, and potential hazards. Proper segregation improves signal integrity, heat dissipation, and compliance with industry standards . Segregation can be achieved using isolation pads or dedicated compartments within the tray.

Vertical Elements and Drop Trays

Vertical segments or drop trays allow cables to descend from the main tray. Each drop tray is automatically sized to the main tray width and can only be added once per location. Moving or adjusting drop trays affects connected cables, so careful placement is necessary .

Summary

Effective cable tray segmentation requires attention to elevation, bend radius, connection points, spacing, and cable segregation. Following these settings ensures a safe, efficient, and compliant electrical installation while optimizing software performance and cable management.
