OLT and Secondary Spectrum Splitter

An OLT is the central control unit in a PON, while secondary spectrum splitters passively divide optical signals to serve multiple subscribers efficiently.

Optical Line Terminal (OLT)

The OLT is the central hub of a PON system, typically located in a telecom central office or data center. It manages upstream and downstream traffic, coordinating communication with ONUs (Optical Network Units) or ONTs (Optical Network Terminals) at the subscriber end. The OLT handles data, voice, and video distribution, ensures bandwidth allocation, and maintains network control and monitoring. It contains modules such as PON cards, control and switching modules, and power supplies, often supporting hot-swapping for operational flexibility .

Secondary Spectrum Splitter

A secondary spectrum splitter is a passive optical device that divides a single input signal from the OLT into multiple outputs, enabling one OLT port to serve many subscribers. Splitters operate without power, reducing operational costs, and are essential for scaling FTTH networks . They are characterized by:

  • Split Ratio: Defines how many outputs a single input is divided into (e.g., 1:4, 1:32, 1:64). Higher split ratios allow more users per OLT port but increase insertion loss .
  • Insertion Loss: The reduction in signal power due to splitting, which must be considered in the optical budget.
  • Uniformity: Ensures consistent signal strength across all outputs.

Splitter Deployment Architectures

Splitters can be deployed in centralized or distributed configurations:

  • Centralized Split: Splitters are located near the OLT in a central office or cabinet. This allows flexible reconfiguration of subscriber connections using fiber jumpers, similar to a point-to-point network. It typically requires fewer fibers on the feeder side but may need more splitter modules in the central location .
  • Distributed Split: Splitters are placed closer to subscribers in closures or pedestals. Once installed, subscriber assignments are fixed, and reconfiguration is not possible via jumpers. This reduces fiber usage in the distribution network but limits flexibility .

Integration in the Optical Distribution Network (ODN)

The ODN connects the OLT to ONTs through feeder, distribution, and drop fibers. Secondary splitters are part of this passive network, distributing optical power while maintaining the optical budget defined by PON standards (e.g., GPON, XGS-PON). Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) filters separate upstream and downstream signals, ensuring efficient spectrum use .

Key Considerations

  • Choosing the correct split ratio balances network capacity and signal quality.
  • Centralized vs distributed splitting affects fiber count, deployment cost, and operational flexibility.
  • Proper loss budget management ensures reliable service to all subscribers. In summary, the OLT serves as the network brain, while secondary spectrum splitters passively distribute optical signals to multiple users. Their design and placement are critical for efficient, scalable, and cost-effective FTTH deployment .
