Link Aggregation Groups (LAGs) allow multiple physical ports to act as a single logical connection. TP-Link switches support:

  • Static LAG: Manually configured aggregation without negotiation.
  • LACP (IEEE 802.3ad): Dynamic aggregation where switches negotiate which ports to combine, providing flexibility and failover support .

Configuration Steps via GUI

  1. Access the Switch Management Interface: Log in to the web GUI of your TP-Link switch.
  2. Navigate to LAG Settings: Go to SwitchingLAGLACP Config.
  3. Select Ports: Choose the ports you want to aggregate (e.g., ports 10, 11, 12).
  4. Assign Admin Key: Ports with the same Admin Key are grouped together.
  5. Set Mode and Status: Choose Active mode and enable the LAG.
  6. Apply Settings: Click Apply to activate the configuration . Tips:
  • Lower system priority values indicate higher priority when negotiating LACP.
  • If system priorities are equal, the device with the smaller MAC address determines the aggregation .
  • Avoid connecting multiple cables between switches without LAG enabled to prevent broadcast storms.

Configuration via CLI

  1. Enter global configuration mode:

    TP-LINK# configure terminal

  2. Create a LAG group:

    TP-LINK(config)# interface link-aggregation 1

  3. Add ports to the group:

    TP-LINK(config-if)# interface range link-aggregation 1

  4. Enable LACP (if supported):

    TP-LINK(config-if)# lacp mode activeTP-LINK(config-if)# no shutdown

  5. Exit and save configuration. You can configure multiple LAG groups (up to 14 on some models) by repeating the steps with different group numbers .

Best Practices

  • Use evenly matched ports (same speed and duplex) for aggregation.
  • Run cables over different physical paths to reduce the risk of simultaneous failure .
  • When connecting to servers or NAS devices, ensure the NICs are configured for LACP to match the switch settings .
  • Monitor LAG status to verify that all member ports are active and traffic is balanced. By following these steps, you can successfully configure aggregation on a TP-Link switch, improving network bandwidth and reliability.
