Types of WDM

  1. Normal WDM (BWDM): Uses two standard wavelengths, typically 1310 nm and 1550 nm, suitable for basic fiber links .
  2. Coarse WDM (CWDM): Provides up to 16 channels with wider spacing, making it cost-effective and suitable for short- to medium-range networks. CWDM uses wavelengths from 1270 nm to 1610 nm with 20 nm spacing .
  3. Dense WDM (DWDM): Supports a larger number of channels with tighter spacing (e.g., 40 channels at 100 GHz or 80 channels at 50 GHz), ideal for long-haul and high-capacity networks. DWDM typically operates in the C-band (1530–1565 nm) and can extend to the L-band (1565–1625 nm) with advanced amplification .
