Proper handling begins with storage and transportation. Cables should remain on their reels with protective material intact until installation. Reels must be stored on flat, firm surfaces, secured to prevent movement, and protected from flooding or sharp objects. Dropping reels or rolling them improperly can damage the cable or its structural integrity. For heavy reels, mechanical aids like forklifts should be used, ensuring forks are perpendicular to the reel flange to avoid deformation .

Installation Techniques

Pulling and Routing

  • Pulling tension must not exceed the cable's specified maximum to prevent internal damage. The maximum tension depends on the cable type, cross-section, and armoring materials .
  • Bend radius is critical: during multiple bends, a minimum radius of 10 times the cable diameter is recommended, while final bending can be tighter, around 7.5 times the diameter .
  • Figure-8 loops are used when laying cable on the ground to prevent twisting. Each loop should be slightly offset from the previous one, and the cable should be flipped so the end to be pulled is on top .
  • Swivel-pulling eyes or similar devices prevent additional twisting during installation .

Environmental and Mechanical Protection

  • Avoid sharp edges, rocks, or objects that could damage the cable. Minimize mechanical pressure at crossing points, especially for armored cables .
  • LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) sheathed cables are more sensitive to cracks and mechanical stress, particularly at higher temperatures .
  • Outdoor cables exposed for more than 24 hours should be protected with temporary coverings to prevent damage .

Routing Considerations

  • Avoid placing fiber cables in conduits with copper cables to prevent excessive loading or twisting .
  • Use plastic clamps with large surface areas to secure cables without pinching or squeezing .
  • Properly route cables through cabinets and raceways, avoiding loops and sharp angles .

Supervision and Quality Control

  • Pre-laying inspection: Verify cable drums for damage, ensure work areas are properly signaled, and confirm that all necessary materials and machinery are available .
  • Post-laying supervision: Check for proper installation, correct tension, and adherence to bend radius requirements. Ensure splices, connectors, and protective elements are correctly installed .
  • Maintain a record of cable specifications and reel data for traceability and troubleshooting .
