Five-wire fiber optic sensor

A five-wire fiber optic sensor is a type of extrinsic fiber optic sensor that uses five electrical connections to provide power, signal output, and control functions for precise detection in industrial applications.

Overview

A five-wire fiber optic sensor typically consists of a fiber optic cable (or head) and an amplifier unit. The fiber head transmits and receives light, while the amplifier processes the signal and provides electrical outputs. The five wires generally include:

  1. Power supply positive (V+)
  2. Power supply negative (V− or ground)
  3. Output signal 1 (e.g., NPN or PNP)
  4. Output signal 2 (optional second channel or complementary output)
  5. Control or feedback wire (used for functions like teach-in, sensitivity adjustment, or status indication) This configuration allows the sensor to provide dual outputs or complementary signals, which is useful for interfacing with PLCs, safety circuits, or other automation systems.

Working Principle

The sensor operates by transmitting light from an LED or laser through the fiber optic cable toward a target. The light is either reflected back (reflective mode) or interrupted (through-beam mode). The amplifier detects changes in light intensity and converts them into electrical signals sent through the output wires. The five-wire setup enables:

  • Stable power supply for consistent operation
  • Dual or complementary outputs for flexible control logic
  • Optional control or feedback for real-time adjustments or status monitoring

Applications

Five-wire fiber optic sensors are commonly used in industrial automation, particularly in environments where:

  • Space is limited and conventional sensors cannot fit
  • High electromagnetic interference exists
  • Precise detection of small or transparent objects is required
  • Multiple outputs are needed for complex control systems Typical applications include object detection, position sensing, liquid level monitoring, and wafer or glass inspection .

Advantages

  • High reliability in harsh environments due to the absence of electronics in the fiber head
  • Flexible installation with multiple output options
  • Enhanced control through additional wires for feedback or complementary signals
  • Compatibility with standard amplifiers and PLC systems In summary, a five-wire fiber optic sensor provides enhanced functionality and flexibility compared to simpler two- or three-wire sensors, making it ideal for complex industrial sensing tasks where multiple outputs or control signals are required.
