A Passive Optical Network (PON) is a point-to-multipoint fiber-optic system that delivers high-speed broadband from a single central office to multiple end users using unpowered optical splitters.

Overview of PON

A PON is a fiber-based access network that connects a service provider's central office to multiple customer premises without requiring powered devices in the field . Unlike traditional point-to-point fiber networks, which require a dedicated fiber for each user, PON uses optical splitters to share a single fiber among many users, reducing infrastructure costs and complexity . This architecture is widely used for fiber-to-the-home (FTTH), enterprise LANs, and smart-building deployments.

Key Components

  1. Optical Line Terminal (OLT): Located at the service provider's central office, the OLT manages data transmission to and from multiple users and controls bandwidth allocation .
  2. Optical Network Terminal (ONT) / Optical Network Unit (ONU): Installed at the customer premises, these devices receive and transmit data over the shared fiber network .
  3. Passive Optical Splitters: Unpowered devices that divide a single optical signal from the OLT into multiple signals for distribution to end users, and combine upstream signals from users back to the OLT . Split ratios can range from 1:32 to 1:128 depending on the deployment.

How PON Works

  • Downstream: The OLT sends a single optical signal that is split by the passive splitter to reach multiple ONTs. Each ONT filters the data intended for its connected devices, often using encryption to ensure privacy .
  • Upstream: Signals from multiple ONTs are combined by the splitter and sent back to the OLT over the same fiber. Time-division multiplexing (TDM) or wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) is used to prevent collisions and manage bandwidth .
  • Topology: PONs use a point-to-multipoint topology, which can be centralized (splitters directly connected to the OLT) or cascaded (splitters connected in stages to reach more users), .
