Dual-fiber redundancy involves connecting switches with two independent fiber links, creating a primary and backup path. Redundancy Protocols

Several protocols can manage dual-fiber redundancy:

  • Spanning Tree Protocol (STP/RSTP/RPVST): Prevents loops in Layer 2 networks with redundant paths. Rapid Per-VLAN Spanning Tree (RPVST) provides faster convergence and allows you to prioritize root bridges for optimal path selection .

  • Device Level Ring (DLR): Used in industrial networks, DLR supports a ring topology with at least two Ethernet ports per node. Configuration Best Practices

  1. Physical Setup: Connect each switch with two fiber links, ensuring one link is primary and the other is backup. For DLR or HSR rings, connect the higher-numbered interface on the active supervisor to the backup supervisor .

  2. Protocol Selection: Choose a redundancy protocol compatible with your network topology. For Layer 2 networks, STP/RPVST is common. For industrial or high-availability networks, DLR, HSR, or PRP may be preferred .

  3. Redundant Gateways: Configure redundant gateways to provide alternate paths to external networks. This ensures that even if a switch or link fails, connectivity to the broader network is maintained .

  4. Testing and Validation: After configuration, simulate link failures to verify automatic failover and recovery times. Ensure all switches in the ring or redundant setup use the same protocol to avoid conflicts .
