Fiber Optic Cable Core Color Chart

Fiber optic cores are color-coded according to the TIA/EIA-598-C standard, using a 12-color sequence that repeats for high-fiber-count cables and is organized into color-coded tubes for easy identification.

Standard 12-Color Sequence

For individual fibers within a cable, the TIA/EIA-598-C standard specifies the following 12-color sequence:

  1. Blue
  2. Orange
  3. Green
  4. Brown
  5. Slate (Gray)
  6. White
  7. Red
  8. Black
  9. Yellow
  10. Violet
  11. Rose (Pink)
  12. Aqua (Light Blue) This sequence is applied to both tight-buffered and loose-tube cables. For cables with more than 12 fibers, the sequence repeats in groups of 12, often with stripes or other markers to differentiate each group .

High-Fiber-Count Cables

In cables with more than 12 fibers (e.g., 24, 48, 96, or 144 fibers), fibers are typically organized into color-coded buffer tubes. Each tube contains up to 12 fibers, and the fibers inside follow the standard 12-color sequence. The tube itself is also color-coded to identify its position within the cable. For example, Fiber #34 in a 48-fiber cable would be the 10th fiber (Violet) in the 3rd tube (Green) . For 16-fiber MPO connectors, a 16-color sequence is sometimes used: 13: Olive, 14: Magenta, 15: Tan, 16: Lime, following European or high-density ribbon cable standards .

Loose-Tube Cable Tube Colors

Loose-tube cables often use a 12-tube color standard for the outer buffer tubes, which typically follows the same color sequence as the fibers inside. This allows technicians to quickly identify both the tube and the fiber within it during installation or splicing .

Connector and Jacket Color Conventions

  • Outer jacket color indicates the fiber type (e.g., OS2, OM3, OM4, OM5) and can help identify single-mode vs. multimode fibers .
  • Connector or boot color identifies the polish type (UPC or APC) and fiber mode, ensuring proper mating and minimizing reflection or signal loss .
  • For hybrid or multi-fiber cables, printed legends on the jacket may be used to indicate fiber count and type.

Practical Benefits

Using standardized color coding:

  • Reduces miswiring and splicing errors
  • Speeds identification in high-density installations
  • Ensures global consistency, allowing technicians worldwide to interpret fiber positions correctly By following these color arrangements, technicians can efficiently manage fiber optic networks, from installation to maintenance, while minimizing errors and downtime.
