How to coil melt fiber

After melting or fusion splicing, optical fibers should be coiled carefully to protect the splice, maintain signal integrity, and ensure organized layout.

Step-by-Step Coiling Procedure

  1. Place Heat-Shrink Sleeves First After fusion splicing, slide the fiber protection sleeve over the splice and heat it according to the manufacturer's instructions. Once cooled, place the sleeve in the fixing groove of the splice tray. This protects the joint and provides a stable base for coiling the remaining fiber .
  2. Coil the Fiber in a Controlled Manner
    • Middle First, Then Sides: Start by coiling the fiber in the middle section of the tray, then coil the remaining fiber on both sides. This method is ideal when tray space is limited and helps prevent sharp bends .
    • Start from One End: Alternatively, begin coiling from one end, fix the heat-shrink tube, and then coil the remaining fiber toward the other end. This allows flexibility based on fiber length and avoids small-radius bends .
  3. Maintain Minimum Bend Radius Ensure the bending radius is at least ten times the fiber diameter, typically no less than 30 mm, to prevent microbends or breakage . Avoid pulling the fiber forcefully; let it follow its natural curve.
  4. Special Cases For fibers that are unusually long, short, or connected to special devices like splitters, coil them separately. Use buffer liners between ordinary fibers and special device fibers to prevent extrusion damage .
  5. Organize in Splice Trays or Patch Panels Route internal fiber pigtails counterclockwise and external fibers clockwise along the tray slots. Excess fiber can be stored on winding rings on both sides of the tray. This layout reduces confusion, simplifies maintenance, and minimizes additional signal loss .
  6. Final Check After coiling, inspect the fiber layout to ensure no sharp bends, kinks, or overlapping fibers. Proper coiling ensures long-term reliability and reduces the risk of fiber breakage or increased splice loss . By following these steps, you can safely coil optical fibers after melting or fusion splicing, maintaining both mechanical protection and optimal signal performance.
